Egbert Jan was al vroeg weeskind, hij was nog geen 3 jaar oud toen zijn moeder stierf. Hij werd door de oudere kinderen opgevoed. Als kind woonde hij door het vroegtijdig sterven van zijn ouders in bij zijn zuster Gerritje.
Op 10-3-1903 vertrok hij naar Barneveld, op een gegeven moment is men hem bij het bevolkingsregister kwijt geraakt, maar 26-8-1911 keert hij vanuit Apeldoorn terug in Barneveld.
Hij kwam toen inwonen bij zijn zuster Hendrikje. Op 31-1-1912 keert hij terug naar Heerde
