Hij 'schoor' of eigenlijk knipte het gedroogde laken glad door de uitstekende vezels te verwijderen met een grote schaar, die de hele breedte van de scheerdis bestreek. Het weefsel werd daartoe eerst geruwd met behulp van de stekels van de kaardebol, die men daartoe speciaal kweekte. De beste kwaliteit laken werd aan beide kanten bewerkt. Deze soort heette vroeger 'scaerlaken'. De lakens uit Den Bosch ('Bussche lakens') waren in de veertiende eeuw om hun kwaliteit reeds gezocht in verschillende Europese landen. Het gildewezen zorgde dan ook voor een intensieve kwaliteitsbewaking. De droogscheerder die doorwerkte bij lamp- of kaarslicht kreeg een stevige boete als men hem betrapte..
