Harrie de Kok was in de jaren 1961-1962 een van de rapporteurs van het "Zwanikkenrapport", een verslag van de katholieke Sociale Academie te Sittard "van een sociaal opbouwproject in de gemeente Goirle ten behoeve van de ontwikkeling van modern buurtwerk ter plaatse". In dit rapport wordt een negatief oordeel uitgesproken over de Goirlenaren. In 1962 bestond tweederde van de Goirlese beroepsbevolking uit arbeiders en had ruim 60% alleen de lagere school doorlopen. Slechts 8,9% van de mannen en 6,1% van de vrouwen genoten middelbaar en hoger onderwijs. Het dorp wordt in dit rapport, ondanks het bestaan van maar liefst honderdtwintig verenigingen, cultuurloos genoemd, verdeeld door haat en nijd, met zeer ingewikke;lde sociale patronen die dikwijls nog te maken hadden met ruzies uit het verleden. De doorsnee Goirlese jeugd werd vrij ruw en primitief in haar optreden bevonden. Het algemene beeld was dat van een zuidelijk zanddorp: goedkerkse grote gezinnen, progressieve linkse partrijen ontbraken en het gezag en invloed van kerk en werkgevers was nog zeer groot. De levensstandaard werd in Goirle rond 1960 nog hoofdzakelijk bepaald door de inkomsen uit de plaatselijke textielindustrie, wat echter inhield dat het gemiddelde inkomen van de Goirlese arbeiders aanzienlijk lager was dan de gemiddelde inkomens van de broepsbevolking uit dezelfde categorieën in de rest van Noord-Brabant en Nederland.
