Hij was de jongste zoon van Conrard van Gaveren van 1516 tot 1527 brabantsch hoogschout te Maastricht, van 1524-1535 heer van Diepenbeek en na 1537 Elsloo, en na 1554 heer van Geul (-Elsloo, 3 mei 1570) en Catharina van Rechterghem
Hij erfde na de dood van zijn broer Jan diens heerlijkheden en werd daardoor heer van Elsloo, Diepenbeek, St. Aechtenrode en Geul.
