Op de grafzerk van het graf van Joost en Aeltgen (een vrouw met wie hij na zijn huwelijk met Gertge getrouwd was) (Nederlands Hervormde kerk te IJsselmonde) staat vermeld:

"Hier leijt begraven Joost Jacobse Verheij ende zijn huijsvrou Aeltgen Michgiels van Velthove. Sij sterft den 28 Meij out 56 iaeren anno 1630. Haren man sterft den 31 Meij out ontrent 85 iaeren anno 1650".

Joost Verheij is zeer waarschijnlijk gevlucht naar de Noordelijke Nederlanden, net als vele andere Vlaamse ambachtslieden en handelaren die het protestantisme aanhingen.
