De reden dat Jean Louis naar Nederland komt is niet vermeld, maar waarschijnlijk is hij één van de vele buitenlandse militairen in Staatse dienst. Het Nederlandse (Staatse) leger bestond in de achttiende eeuw voor ongeveer 50 - 60 procent uit buitenlandse soldaten, omdat Nederlanders het militaire vak als minderwaardig beschouwden. Jean Louis werd staatsburger/ Nederlander op 11 januari 1798 in Maastricht. Bij deze gelegenheid werd zijn Franse naam vernederlandst in Johannes Ludovicus Warnas. Na het overlijden van Johanna hertrouwt hij op 8 juli 1792 te Maastricht met Anna Maria Jonkhans.
