Volgens WWW.Anneke-Huijskens-luijten.nl betekent 'derhe' in de oertaal Uyghur hout of bos, en het achtervoegsel -ven verwijst naar een persoon. Zo verder redenerend is Derheven/Dirven dus de bosbeheerder of houtbeheerder. Een andere hypothese is dat Dirwyf de weduwe zou zijn van Dirk, en een derde hypothese gaat er van uit dat Dierwief in het oud-Hollands "lieve vrouw" betekent (vergelijk het woord dierbaar).
