Notes about Johannes Hendriks van Meerling

Johannes woonde ten tijde van zijn huwelijk al in Vianen, maar een geboorteaantekening van een JO(h)annes met een vader die Hendrik heet is niet gevonden in die gemeente.

De familie (Van) Meerling komt in de 17e en 18e eeuw vaak voor in de archieven van de stad Utrecht, vooral omdat de mannen actief waren als juristen. Dat duidt, zeker in die tijd, op een goede afkomst van de familie. In de archieven vinden we onder andere:

1618: Jacob Martensz van Meerlingh, Substituut-Schout van de stad Utrecht en rentmeester van het rentambt van de gecombineerde broederschappen binnen Utrecht. Hij is getrouwd geweest met Hillegonde (Hillichgen) Henrix. Hij is begraven op 31-10-1637 te Utrecht en zij op 6-4-1647 te Utrecht.
1626 - 1628: Henrick Meerlingh, treedt gedurende deze twee jaren veelvuldig op als procureur voor de stad Utrecht. gezien zijn voornaam is het mogelijk dat hij inderdaad de zoon is van Jacob en Hillegonda, en vernoemd naar zijn opa van moederszijde. Deze Hedrick is te oud om de vader te zijn van deze Johannes Hendriks, maar is misschien zijn opa?
1644: van de hand van Johannes Meerlingh verschijnt een boek over het politieke vraagstuk van marteling. Een exemplaar van dat Latijnstalige boek bevindt zich nu nog in de Nationale Bibliotheek van Frankrijk.
1646: een Johannes Meerlingh uit Utrecht schrijft zich in als student aan de Hogeschool van Genève, Zwitserland.
1658: Johannes Meerlingh, neef van Josina en Margaretha Meerlingh, wordt genoemd als advocaat te Londen. Ook bij een schuldbekentenis ten laste van Johannes Meerlingh in 1677 wordt nog gesteld dat hij in Engeland woont.

De naam MEERLINCK en andere schrijfvarianten komt ook veel voor in West-Vlaanderen, nabij de Westhoek (Lapscheure, Moerkerke, Blankenberge, etc.). Dat kan betekenen dat de familie Meerling oorspronkelijk afkomstig is uit West-Vlaanderen, en net als vele duizenden andere Vlaamse protestanten tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog is gevlucht naar het veiliger Holland.
