Notes about Aart Hartog

Aart woonde in Nijmegen in de Heijderijkstraat, en was uitvoerder bij maatschappij 'De Bylandt', die mede voor de steenfabrieken ten oosten van Nijmegen en Arnhem klei won bij Spijk. Het gat dat daar gegraven is heet nu nog steeds 'De Bylandt', en is deels een recreatiegebied geworden.

Aart heeft als Sliedrechts baggeraar gewerkt aan het Suezkanaal. Waarschijnlijk werkte hij daar voor Volker & Bos, die met hun 'Compagnie Universelle du Canal maritime de Suez' grote baggerwerken uitvoerden tussen 1906 en 1914. Hoofduitvoerder was Sliedrechtenaar C.H. Kraaijeveld. Het werk bestond uit een verruiming bij Ismaïla, in het Timsakmeer en het Grote en Kleine Bittermeer. In totaal moest 10.800.000 m3 verzet worden, en de aanneemsom bedroeg zes miljoen gulden. Er werd dag en nacht doorgewerkt, in ploegendienst. Het Europees personeel van 40 mannen bestond grotendeels uit Sliedrechters. Daarnaast werkten er natuurlijk ook een groot aantal Egyptenaren. Van 1909 tot 1910 baggerden men voor 40.000 gulden in het zuidelijk bassin van de haven van Suez. In 1913 werd gebaggerd op de rede van Port Saïd en in het Suezkanaal zelf voor totaal 2,2 miljoen gulden. In 1914 werd de combinatie van Volker & Bos in Egypte ontbonden. De firma van A. Bos baggerde nog afzonderlijk door tot 1916.

Aart was redelijk welgesteld, want hij bezat enkele huizen in Nijmegen.
