Notes about Adriaen Joris Gijsbrechts Haneveer

Het bijzondere aan deze familie Haneveer is dat ze rond 1648, als de Vrede van Munster wordt getekend, overgaat van de RK Kerk naar de Gereformeerde kerk, en zich laten inschrijven in het lidmatenboek van Gilze. Dit is opgetekend door de toenmalige dominee Johannes van Amerstede. Heel uniek in een Rooms dorp als Gilze. Of het toeval is of niet, maar in 1650 wordt Adriaen Joris Gijsbrechts alias Haneveer, 35 jaar oud, benoemd tot schepen (wethouder) van Gilze. Deze benoeming krijgt hij van de kleinzoon van Willem de Zwijger, Stadhouder Willem II.

Als verklaring voor de naam Haneveer: de naam 'Hane' en 'Fere' is volgens de Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven afgeleid van de benaming 'vrijbuiters' die in de middeleeuwen leefden, welke als zinnebeeld van vechtlust een hanenveer op de hoed droegen. Een andere toepassing uit die tijd is de aanduiding van een bazige vrouw. Men sprak destijds over “een haneveer van een vrouw.”
