Jean komt waarschijnlijk uit Mortagne-du-Nord, een gemeente in het Franse Noorderdepartement. De gemeente telt ruim 1.600 inwoners en maakt deel uit van het arrondissement Valenciennes. Mortagne ligt aan de samenvloeiing van de Schelde en de Scarpe, tegen de grens met België. Uit die streek kwamen indertijd behoorlik wat Franse protestanten, zogenaamde hugenoten, die door de katholieke koning van Frankrijk werden opgejaagd en met de dood bedreigd. Velen van hen vluchtten in de 17e eeuw naar de veiliger Noordelijke Nederlanden, vooral naar Zeeland en Holland.
