Jan Everts Faber was in 1739 beneficiant van het Houckema-leen, waarvan hij geen gebruik maakte. In 1747 kwam hij met zijn vader en stiefmoeder in Bolsward wonen. Na zijn vaders dood in 1762 nam hij diens smederij in de Sint-Jansstraat over. In 1769 werd hij diaken en later trad hij op als boekhouder van de diaconie. Op 17 juni 1791 trad hij met drie anderen op als getuige tegen de president-burgemeester, Dirk Eerdmans, die van patriottistische sympathieën werd verdacht. Onder de Bataafse republiek werd Jan Everts Faber beschuldigd van heling van ijzerwaren en kreeg hij huisarrest.
