Als Gerardus en Geertrudis hun eerste kind krijgen, dochter Maria in 1743 te Geertruidenberg, dan wordt zijn achternaam geschreven c.q. getranscribeerd in de online databases als EFFERS. Bij de acht dopen daarna (tot 1758) wordt de achternaam ook geschreven als ESSER en ESSEER. Als doopgetuigen komen er twee familieleden voor in de jaren 1743-1758: ene Maria Essers (1743) en een Christina Essers (1758). Wat hun familiale band is met Gerardus is onbekend.

De naam ESSERS komt wel veel voor in Zuid-Limburg, en wellicht is Gerardus een militair geweest, afkomstig uit het zuiden, gelegerd in Geertruidenberg?
