De oorsprong van de familienaam Covel zou kunnen liggen bij een middeleeuws kledingstuk: Een kovel houdt het midden tussen een capuchon en een korte schoudermantel. In kerkelijke terminologie is het een koormantel en ook kwam de kovel voor bij de ambtskleding der burgerlijke overheid. Later verhuisde een familietak naar Groot-Ammers, waar ze zich De Kogel gingen noemen
