De familie Bodart is afkomstig uit Wallonië. De meeste vermeldingen van Bodarts in de eerste helft van de 18e eeuw hebben te maken met huwelijken die zijn geregistreerd in het Trouwboek van de Waalse dragonders en grenadiers. De namen Bodart en Charlier komen beide zeer veel voor in de provincie Namen (Namur), maar ook in de provincie Luik. In het Roermondse archief komen twee verwarrende mededelingen voor over Joseph Bodart. In de eerste wordt hij rond 1754 geboren in Wanecke (klinkt Duits?), en in de tweede in 1747 in Vannet (klinkt Waals/Frans). Beide plaatsen zijn echter onbekend.

Opmerkelijk genoeg wordt hij bij zijn huwelijk nog genoemd met de voornamen MARTIN JOSEPH, maar die eerste naam valt later in zijn leven weg.

Een zoon van Joseph Bodart en Elizabeth Charlier werd geboren in het dorpje Clermont, vlak ten zuiden van de Belgische Voerstreek. Dat betekent dat ze nog even woonden in het dorp waar ze trouwden.
