Claas en Maertie woonde bij de doop van Lijna in maart 1698 in de Schildersteeg te Rotterdam.

De achternaam De Beer doet vermoeden dat Claas afstamt van de Tilburgse familie van die naam. Eind 16e, begin 17e eeuw vertrokken veel Tilburgse wolhandelaren en textielwerkers die sympathiek stonden tegenover het protestantisme naar Rotterdam. Vanuit deze stad bleven ze vaak handels- en familiebanden onderhouden met hun Brabantse relaties.

Anderzijds geeft zijn huwelijksakte weer dat hij afkomstig was uit Batavia, de hoofdstad van Nederlands-Indië. Wellicht is Claas dus als zeeman of soldaat naar 'de Oost' gegaan en weer teruggekeerd, of hij is daar geboren. In de VOC-archieven vinden we enkele verwijzingen naar ene Claes de Beer. Omdat er indertijd niet veel Nederlandse zeelui in die wateren actief waren, is het aannemelijk dat het hier om 'onze' Claas gaat:

1. Rapport van den gesaghebber op de chialoup de Houtsnip Claes de Beer aen de residenten tot Palembangh, gedateert 26 Julij 1690.
2. Rapport van den gesaghebber op de chialoup de Houtsnip met name Claas de Beer aan de residenten tot Palimbangh, gedateerd 26 Julij 1690 (ontfangen 17 Augustus 1690 per de Lijster).
