Graaf van Savoye etc 1109, rijksgraaf en generalvicaris voor N.-Italië 1111. Hij bevorderde kloosterstichtingen als Abondance (Chablais), St-Sulpice (Bugey) en Arvieres (Valmeroy). Aanvankelijk lekenabt van St-Maurice-d'Agaune (Wallis), gaf dit 1128 op ten gunste van de voogdijrechten van deze voornaamste Bourgondische abdij. In plaats daarvan verwierf hij zich met de stichting van de abdij Hautecombe een nieuw huisklooster. Kreeg het markgraafschap Turijn-Susa met Piemont terug en breidde zijn heerschappij uit tot de noordoever van het meer van Genève en tot in Waadtland met Vevey, Yverdon en Moudon. Hij nam met zijn neef, koning Lodewijk VII van Frankrijk, deel aan de Tweede Kruistocht en overleed op de terugweg op Cyprus.
