Derde dochter van Otto II van Saksen en Theophanu. Ze zou 10 kinderen gehad hebben. Mathilde werd in het nonnenklooster Essen bij heer nicht Mathilde van Schwaben opgevoed. Haar huwelijk werd door het merendeel der rijksgroten als onder haar stand beschouwd. Volgens een legende uit het klooster Brauweiler zou haar broer Otto III haar bij het schaakspel aan Ezzo hebben verloren. De koning gaaf zijn zuster, om haar positie te verhogen, een grote bruidschat mee, waaronder waarschijnlijk Saalfeld.
