In de annalen van Flodoard in het midden van de elfde eeuw staat in een toegevoegde brief van graaf Rainald van Bourgondië aan hertog Willem VI van Aquitanië: "de Mathilde (dochter van Lodewijk IV van Frankrijk en gemalin van koning Koenraad van Bourgondië) processit Rudolfus rex et Mathildis, sorror ejus....; de Mathilde, filia Mathildae, Berta....; de Berta Geraldus Genevensis". Gerolds moeder Berta was waarschijnlijk met Gerhard van Egisheim getrouwd, een broer van paus Leo IX. In ieder geval was zij een dochter van Mathilde van Bourgondië, dochter van Koenraad van Bourgondië en Mathilde van West-Francië (Karolinger).
