Er bestaat twijfel of deze Nicolaes wel de vader is van Willem van Muijlwijck. Een aantal bronnen geeft aan dat er simpelweg geen hard bewijs is, en dat deze verwantschapsclaim gebaseerd is op vermoedens. vanwege het grote aantal bronnen dat toch deze lijn aanhoudt, is hier ook gekozen om deze (onzekere) lijn te volgen.

Hij voerde als wapen: een veld van goud doorsneden met een fasce van keel, bezaaid met 15 bizans ?(9 en 6)? van keel. Vermeld in 1320. Hij was, samen met zijn zuster Lijsbeth, in conflict geraakt met Willem van Hoorne, Heer van Altena over de door hen ge-erfde bezittingen in het land van Altena.
