Vermeld 1195, seneschalk van Champagne 1224, trouwt (1) voor 1209 Ermengarde de Montcler, vermeld 1209/18. Nam deel aan de Vijfde Kruistocht, streed tegen de Katharen en onderscheidde zich bij de verovering van Damiate in Egypte onder Johan van Brienne. [Zijn zoon Jean de Joinville (1224/1317 = 93 jaar!), is als historicus bekend geworden. Hij schreef een verslag van de Zevende Kruistocht en een biografie van de Franse koning en kruisvaarder Lodewijk IX, op grond waarvan deze heiligverklaard werd. Deze "Histoire de saint Louis (1272/1309)" geldt als oudste biografie in moderne zin].
