Heeft het voorkomen van een krachtige Vikinger zoals zijn broer Guiscard, stamvader de (Noormannen-) koningen van Napels-Sicilië. Komt ca. 1054 naar Italië, wordt door zijn broers achtergesteld en begint in 1061 Sicilië te veroveren op de Saracenen, Palermo in 1077, Syracuse in 1088. Noemt zich graaf van Sicilië-Apulië, wordt vasal van de Paus, wat de Siciliaanse geschiedenis voor eeuwen mee zou bestemmen. Hij steunt de Paus tegen keizer Hendrik IV. Na de dood van zijn machtige broer Robert in 1085 verlegt zich het politieke zwaartepunt van de familie van Apulië naar Sicilië. Roger ondersteunt de Eerste Kruistocht, waarin zijn neefs Boemund en Tankred een belangrijke rol zouden spelen, zonder er echter zelf aan deel te nemen. Trouwt (1) 1061 Judit van Evreux, trouwt (2) ca. 1077 Fremburg d'Eu, beide nichten van hem uit Normandië.
