Spijker is de benaming voor een voorraadschuur waar graan opgeslagen wordt, en een oude verbastering van het woord spicarium, spica is Latijn voor graan. Dit woord voor graanopslagplaats vinden we door heel Nederland maar vooral in het noorden en het oosten van Nederland.

Eeuwen geleden hadden belastingkantoren op het platteland vaak een spijker. Boeren moesten een tiende van hun oogst inleveren als belasting. Uiteraard komen we de spijker vaker tegen als de opslagplaats voor boeren of gemeenschappen.
