Aanvankelijk heer van Briey en Stenay, volgde in 1190 zijn op de 3e kruistocht overleden broer Henri op als graaf van Bar en Mousson. Veroverde 1197 Luxemburg, trouwde (3) 1197 (nadat hij Ermensinde van Bar-sur-Seine verstoten had) erfdochter Ermensinde van Luxemburg. Kon Luxemburg echter niet voor zijn nageslacht behouden. Hij heerste over een uitgebried territorium langs de Maas aan de grenzen van Lotharingen en Champagne.
Hij trouwde met (1) Laurette van Looz, getrouwd ca. 1170, ovl. voor/in 1184, ref.
Hij trouwde met (2) Ermensinde van Bar-sur-Seine, getrouwd 1189 (verstoten ca. 1195),
