At the beginning of WW I (August 1914) she stayed with her family at home at the farm in the Haringeweg at Zonnebeke till february 1915.
Her husband already died in 1913.
Later on she flied with her family in the direction of France.
On February 1 1915 two childern emil and Madeleine Cornardt have been hospitalised in the civil hospital at Ypres (actual psychiatric clinic of the Holy Heart) with typhus. since there were a lot of typhus patients, she was transported by train to Poperinge, where Emiel Cornardt died at 7 February 1915.
His sister Madeleine died on the same day at St. Omer in France.
Maria Pharilda stayed till May 1915 with her daughter Leonie at the farm of Mr. Cyrille Beddeleem, Abeelseweg at Poperinge . From there they went on to Buysscheure in France where they stayed for the rest of the war by her oldest daughter Celine Cornardt, who was married to Cyriel Callens and who has fled to this place.
Her son Cyriel Cornardt was enroled as a soldier in the 4th Company of the first Division and got his military training in Fécamp (France).
Her daughters Zoë and Zulma cornardt fled by train to Paris, where they, after having been hospitalized in the "Hôtel Dieu", salle Ste Anne, found a job as maid servants by rich families during the rest of wartime.
