John van Waterschoot was wiskundige en econoom. Hij was de eerste titularis van de leerstoel econometrie aan de Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven (België). Dankzij zijn veelzijdige belangstelling was hij ook betrokken bij de journalistiek, de bedrijfsorganisatie en de nationale en Europese politiek. In 1991 verhief koning Boudewijn hem tot de adelstand. De fascinerende vraag naar de realiteit van het verschijnsel ‘UFO’ hield hem ruim veertig jaar bezig en in 1997 gaf uitgever Lannoo zijn boek uit met de titel: ‘UFO’s Boven België’ Vijftig jaar waarneming, onderzoek en verklaringen.
