    In Polen hebben de nazi’s de grote vernietigingskampen gebouwd. Twee er van, Auschwitz-Birkenau en Majdanek, waren oorspronkelijk gebouwd als concentratiekamp voor tegenstanders van de Duitsers en krijgsgevangenen. Treblinka, Sobibor en Belzec werden in het leven geroepen in het kader van Aktion Reinhard, de codenaam voor de liquidatie van de Joden in Oost-Europa. Chelmno, niet ver van Lódz, was bedoeld om de Joden van de Warthegau (het deel van Polen dat in 1939 door Duitsland was veroverd) om te brengen.
    In Hitler-Duitsland was geen plaats voor joden, zij moesten "uitgeroeid" worden. Vanuit Westerbork vertrokken de treinen naar de dood, en niemand kon de wissel naar het leven overzetten. Het gezin van Erich Dasché woonde nog niet zo lang in Goirle. Zij dachten hier veilig te zijn, maar op 28 augustus 1942 tussen 16.30 uur en 17.00 moest het gezin in hun woning in de Akkerstraat klaar staan voor vertrek. Zij kwamen niet meer terug in Goirle. De moeder en haar drie kinderen werden vergast in Auschwitz, de vader stierf in het arbeidskamp.
