Een wever, die wever blijft.

Onze bekendste, hoogste (50 meter) en oudste (van 1904) fabrieksschoorsteen is die van de voormalige BEKA-fabriek in de St. Josephstraat. Begonnen in 1853 na het huwelijk van de heer Van den Bergh en mevrouw Krabbendam was BEKA tot 1968 één van de grootste wollenstoffenfabrieken van Tilburg.

Gelukkig bestaan er nog enkele foto's van Tilburgse thuiswevers, gemaakt in de periode 1900-1940. Deze geven een goed beeld van het ambachtelijke weven, een niet te onderschatten handwerk. De benodigde kennis en vaardigheid ging vaak over van vader-op-zoon, generaties-lang.

Van het weven zoals dat plaats vond in een fabriek bestaan nauwelijks goede foto's. Een goede uitzondering is de foto uit 1965 gemaakt door fotograaf Schmidlin bij BEKA. Hierop is de belangrijkste functie van de machinale wever zichtbaar, namelijk het vervangen van de lege garen'pijp' door een nieuwe, een volle. Hier op een Pools Tektima-getouw.Omdat deze foto, als de beroemde Tilburgse foto's van Berssenbrugge, ongetwijfeld ook een ‘eeuwig leven' zal krijgen is er lang gezocht wie de persoon op de foto is.
Het blijkt Franciscus Antonius Wilhelmus Cruijssen te zijn, geboren in 1912 in de Kapelstraat. Toen de foto werd gemaakt werkte hij al veertig jaar bij BEKA en woonde aan de Hobbemastraat 4, waar ook zijn vier kinderen zijn geboren. In 1968, bij het sluiten van BEKA, waren zijn rugklachten voldoende aanleiding om in de W.A.O. te belanden.
In de familie van Frans komt het vaker voor dat men oud wordt. Zelf wordt hij dit jaar 95. Bijzonder is ook dat hij zijn 65-jarig huwelijksfeest heeft kunnen vieren.

Ongetwijfeld zal er permanent belangstelling blijven bestaan voor de Tilburgse textiel en daarmee ook voor de foto uit 1965 van Frans Cruijssen, wever bij BEKA.
