Notes about Adriaan Brouwers

Fabrieksarbeider/linnenwever Adriaan Brouwers werd geboren te Goirle op 29 maart 1854 en overleed aldaar op 17 augustus 1920. Hij was een zoon van Jan Baptist Brouwers en Johanna Maria Bormans. Te Goirle trouwde Adriaan op 11 september 1876 met Johanna (Hanneke) van Besouw, geboren te Goirle op 16 augustus 1956 en aldaar overleden op 28 augustus 1930. Zij was een dochter van linnenwever Jan Baptist van Besouw en spinster Johanna Versteden. In 1891 was Brouwers een van de ondervraagden in de enquete over de gedwongen winkelnering. Hij verklaarde als fabrieksarbeider bij de firma Van Besouw 7 gulden per week te verdienen. Ondanks het feit dat de waren in de winkel van zijn patroon duurder waren dan elders, kocht hij toch bij Van Besouw, omdat daar krediet gegeven werd. Met zijn gezin van zeven kinderen woonde hij in een huisje dat bestond uit twee kamers en een keuken, maar hij betaalde geen huur, omdat hij voor en na zijn werktijd in de fabriek de tuin bewerkte van zijn huisbaas.
