B. Petrus Cornelis de Brouwer, priester en leraar, geboren te Hilvarenbeek op 17 oktober 1874, promoveerde tot doctor in de klassieke talen, trad in bij de congregatie van de Fraters van Tilburg, overleden te Tilburg op 19 november 1961, en werd drie dagen later begraven te Hilvarenbeek. Hij was de stichter en eerste rector van het gymnasium in Tilburg, dat later het Sint-Odulphuslyceum zou worden. Hij is daarmee de vader van het katholiek gymnasiaal en middelbaar onderwijs in Brabant en zo één van Brabants grootste emancipatoren geworden. Voorts was hij geheim kamerheer van paus Johannes XXIII en ridder in de orden van de Nederlandse Leeuw en van Oranje-Nassau.
De "emancipator van Brabant" en "bezieler van de Brabantse bewustwording" wordt door de rooms-katholieke historicus L.J. Rogier gekenschetst als "een simele en bekrompen dorpspastoor (...), bang voor al het nieuwe, die nog droomde van een kruisridderideaal, verknocht was aan het kalme ritme van het Brabantse boerendorp en wars van nieuwerwetse leuzen". Hij was een van de initiatoren en tot in het begin van de oorlog toonaangevende leider van de vereniging Brabantie Nostra, die in 1935 begon met de uitgave van een tijdschrift met dezelfde naam.(172) Het oordeel van historici varieert van 'katholieke en semi-fascistische beweging' tot 'niet fascistoïde' (in de betekenis van net niet) en 'conservatief katholiek en anti-democratisch'. Brabantia Nostra keerde zich weliswaar tegen de NSB, maar nam niet eenduidig stelling tegen het fascistische Zwart Front en het Groot-Nederlandse Verdinaso. De Brouwer en zijn beweging waren gericht op herleving van het katholicisme, uitgesproken anti-modernistisch, gericht op het behoud van pre-industriële waarden en fel gekant tegen het Hollandse centralisme (inclusief dat uit de Generaliteitsperiode). De Duitse inval zag hij als kans om "onze Brabantse kernkracht te ontwikkelen".(173) Zijn in 1947 verschenen Geschiedenis van Hilvarenbeek tot 1813 is een schoolvoorbeeld van parochialistische geschiedbeoefening.(174)(175)
