Na een verlovings periode , besloot Nicolaas om zich te Tilburg te vestigen, waarbij hij eerst als textielarbeider werkzaam was bij Fa. Blomjous aan de Veemarktstraat te Tilburg; en tevens als 'eigen baas'; met het venten van vis met een daartoe zelf getimmerde viskar, waarna in 1922 het pand (wevershuisje) aan de Broekhovenseweg 79 te Tilburg werd aangekocht. Dit werd vervolgens grondig uitgebouwd en verhoogd, met het doel er een winkel in Vis en zuivel te beginnen, kompleet met magazijn en woonruimte, telefoonverbinding, douche, en koelinstalatie (1923 !) Adriana Maria, mensen noemde haar "Sjaan", verzogde zelf de boekhouding. Zij had ondernemersgeest en was het brein achter 'het bedrijven'
