Reconstructie van een practical joke, bedacht en uitgevoerd door een aantal vrienden met socialistische ambities. De meesten hadden deelgenomen aan de staking in 1904 bij Van Puijenbroek, waardoor ze werden uitgesloten en zonder werk kwamen te zitten. Een van deze vrienden, C. A. de Vries, kwam in Enschede terecht, waar hij kennismaakte met het `echte` socialisme, dat daar door de Algemene Bond van Textielarbeiders De Eeendracht snel van de grond kwam. De vrienden ergerden zich vreselijk aan de vele artikelen in de lokale pers, waarin het socialisme werd afgeschilderd als een uitvinding van de duivel. Deze artikelen zouden met de steun van de werkgevers en de geestelijkheid geschreven zijn door de plaatselijke journalist Peer Wagtmans. Om die een lesje te leren, waarschuwde men hem dat er een geheime bijeenkomst van socialisten gehouden werd. Peer trapte erin. Hij luisterde `de rode bende` af en schreef hierover een verhaal in de Nieuwe Tilburgsche Courant van 28 oktober 1905. De man op de voorgrond links, met baard, is Toon Klop. Geheel rechts C.
