Notes about Egidius Josephus Swinkels

E.J. Swinkels was fabrikant
Helmond heeft vele textielfabrieken gekend. Een daarvan was de fabriek van Wilhelmus Hubertus Franciscus Swinkels. Het gemeenteverslag van 1861 maakt melding van de start van het bedrijf. “In het afgeloopene jaar is door de firma Swinkels & Theissen alhier een apprêt voor fabriekaten met een stoomketeltje opgerigt en, ofschoon aanvankelijk op kleine schaal, echter goed schijnt te werken en het te vertrouwen is dat zij zich langzamerhand zal uitbreiden om aan de eischen der fabriek te kunnen voldoen.” Een bedrijf werd pas fabriek genoemd als er meer dan 20 arbeiders werkzaam waren. In 1867 kocht Swinkels van Arnoldus Bots een perceel bouwland in de Waart. Het lag aan de Kanaaldijk Noord-West. Swinkels bouwde er een villa naast een stoomververij. In 1871 werkten bij het bedrijf 36 mannen en 10 jongens.

Na het overlijden van Wilhelmus Swinkels in 1891 zetten zijn weduwe Maria Huberta van Will en zijn zoon Egidius Josephus Swinkels het bedrijf voort. In die tijd was het bedrijf gegroeid tot 69 arbeiders, waarvan 49 mannen, 10 vrouwen, zeven jongens en 3 meisjes. Uit de gegevens in het kadaster blijkt dat het bedrijf steeds bleef uitbreiden. Tussen 1911 en 1918 staat vijf keer vermeld dat er bijgebouwd werd. In 1921 werd het bedrijf een vennootschap onder firma onder de naam “firma W. Swinkels”. Het personeel bestond op dat moment uit 165 mannen, 88 vrouwen, 2 jongens en 10 meisjes. In 1935 viel het doek voor de textielfabriek toen op 8 augustus het bedrijf failliet ging.

In de fotocollectie van de archiefdienst zit ook een rubriek calamiteiten. Als je deze doorkijkt valt op dat de industrie in Helmond veel door grote branden getroffen is. Ook de textielfabriek van Swinkels ontkwam daar niet aan. Deze foto dateert van 15 mei 1915.

Het verslag van de brandweer vermeldt dat de brand uitbrak op half zes ’s middags. De brand leek zo ernstig dat gevreesd werd dat er niets te blussen viel en dat het bedrijf geheel verloren zou gaan. Toch wist men door ‘krachtig optreden’ een deel van de fabriek te redden en kon om acht uur ’s avonds het sein brand meester gegeven worden. De foto is genomen door een lid van de Vrijwillige Brandweer Helmond.
