De priester Arnoldus Swaens werd in1541 in Goirle geboren. In 1568 werd hij tot kanunnik van Geertruidenberg benoemd. Drie jaar later in 1571 werd hij deken van het district Geertruidenberg. Hij was ook kapittelheer van het kapittel van het kasteel Grave, zoals blijkt uit de aanhef van zijn testament: “Ick heer en Mr Aert Swaens….canoninck des capittels in de capelle des Graefzen casteels”. Bij de inname van Geertruidenberg in 1573 door de protestantse troepen ontsnapte Swaens met veel moeite aan de bloedige vervolging. Bij de tweede verovering van de stad in 1593 door prins Maurits, vluchtte Swaens naar ’s-Hertogenbosch, waar hij meestal zijn verblijf hield op het Groot-Begijnhof. Swaens schreef verschillende werken over de onderrichting en leiding van de jeugd. Hij stichtte diverse studie beurzen o.a. voor Goirlese priesterstudenten. Maar namen zijn helaas niet bekend. Oisterwijk dankte zijn gasthuis aan hem. Omstreeks 1626 is hij overleden, waarschijnlijk op het Groot-Begijnhof in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
