Ad Staps en Marianne Smulders komen allebei uit Tilburg. Marianne was de oudste van zeven kinderen. Haar vader was bakker en haar moeder werkte veel in de bakkerij. Marianne bracht brood rond met de kar. Ze heeft de MULO gedaan en gewerkt als secretaresse op een notariskantoor in Tilburg.
Ad Staps was de jongste in een gezin met twee kinderen. Zijn jeugd draaide om voetbal. Hij speelde bij Noad en was behoorlijk goed. Hij had een grote witte vetkuif en reed op een brommer. Ad moest van zijn vader “een vak leren”. Hij ging naar de kweekschool. In 1958 kregen Ad Staps en Marian Smulders (die allebei in dezelfde Tilburgse buurt zijn opgegroeid) verkering, ze trouwden in Tilburg op 18 november1964 en verhuisden naar de Hoofdstraat in Rijen en kregen daar hun eerste kind. Daarna verhuisden zij naar het Brabantpark in Rijen waar zij nog twee kinderen kregen.
Ad Staps was eerst onderwijzer op de Pius X-school in Rijen maar werd al snel directeur op het Korenveld in Tilburg (basisschool). Daarnaast was hij secretaris van de stichting Sociaal Kultureel Werk in Rijen en gaf hij gymlessen aan Rijense dames. Ad was niet veel thuis. maar in de vakanties was hij samen met zijn gezin. Iedere zomer gingen zij kamperen en sinds 1981 ook jaarlijks met het hele gezin op wintersport. Toen ook de jongste dochter naar de middelbare school ging, is Marianne Smulders weer in deeltijd gaan werken. In 1993 waren alle kinderen het huis uit. Anke en Bernadette woonden in Rijen in de buurt van hun vader en moeder. Inge trok de wijde wereld in en had alleen veel belcontact met thuis. In 1996 kregen Ad Staps en Marianne Smulders hun eerste kleinkind en daarna volgden er nog vier. Ad Staps ging met vervroegd pensioen na de fusie van zijn school met een aantal andere basisscholen in Tilburg. Rond die tijd werd hij ook ziek. Hij knapte weer op, maar in 2001 kwam de kanker terug en is hij overleden. Hij heeft de laatste 2 kleinkinderen niet meer gekend.
Marianne Smulders verhuisde toen naar een appartement in Rijen, waar zij de steun en toeverlaat voor haar dochters en kleinkinderen blijft. Zij is een opleiding schilderen gaan doen in Arendonk in België.
