• Pater Adjutus van Goirle, was in de wereld Jan Baptist Smarius. Hij werd gedoopt te Goirle op 13 maart 1746 als zoon van uit Tilburg afkomstige ouders: Jan Hubert Smarius (Smariën) en Eva Jacob de Beer. Smarius studeerde in Leuven en werd in 1770 priester gewijd in de orde der capucijnen, waar hij een van de leidende figuren werd, o.a. als raadslid van pater Ambrosius van Maastricht. In Hasselt werd hij in 1785 gekozen tot custos (letterlijk vertaald koster, belast met de verzorging van de erediensten). Van 1791 tot 1794 was hij gardiaan (overste) van het klooster te Velp aan de Maas. Hij overleed plotseling te Gelder (Duitsland) 'bij de Pater Noster onder de H. Mis' op 26 oktober 1799. Op het schilderij is dan ook zijn leeftijd van 53 jaar vermeld (links boven). In het toen nog Nederlandstalige Gelder (nu Geldern) was hij lector en belast met de opleiding van jonge medebroeders. Zijn ouders waren gegoed te Goirle, waar zij woonden 'aen de toren', en te Tilburg op het Goirke, aan de Stokhasselt en de Hoeven. Smarius had nog twee broers die priester werden. Te Goirle werd de nalatenschap van zijn ouders verdeeld tussen zijn broer Willem en zijn zussen Maria, getrouwd met Peter Ockers, Geertruij, getrouwd met Willibrordus Peters, en Dorothea, ongehuwd winkelierster en
