Als jongeling speelde Roelf tuba in de Vledderveense muziekvereniging "Juliana". Roelf pachtte een boerderij (23 ha) in Vledderveen, direct na de tweede wereldoorlog. Deze boerderij, Vledderweg 26 (plaats U 15), stond aan de andere kant van het diep (kanaal) diect naast de boerderij van zijn vader Freerk Eggens. Hij pachtte de boerderij van de N.V. Handelsmaatschappij A. van Linge Ezn. te Veendam. Roelf nam de pacht over van de fam. Middelburg die als ex NSB-er de boerderij na de oorlog gedwongen moesten verlaten.
Na enige jaren verruilde Roelf Vledderveen voor een boerenbedrijf in wording in de NO - Polder. Ook daar had hij het niet naar zijn zin en vertrok naar Nieuw Zeeland in februari 1978.
