Gerritdina vertrok uit Winschoten op 2 Juli 1880 met bestemming Coronel/Chili. Het is niet bekend waar het echtpaar woonde.
Evert Valk was kapitein op het schip de " Pondichery", gebouwd in Quebec en aangekocht in 1880 door de Chileense Compañia de Maderas i Buques in Juni 1886 met vrouw en drie zoontjes, van resp. 5 jr, 2 jr en 9 maanden, aan boord, op weg van Port Townsend (Washington) naar Valparaiso/Chili, waar het schip 11 Juni de haven invoer. Door plotseling opkomende storm sloeg het schip te pletter op de rotsen en verdwenen Evert Valk, zijn vrouw en kinderen en nog negen bemanningsleden in de golven voor de ogen van de Andes kustwacht. Slechts 5 personen konden gered worden, onder welke een Eberhard Henkes, 16 jaar en bediende aan boord, neef van de kapitein.
