      De Franse Revolutie luidde de scheiding van kerk en staat in en kerkelijke huwelijken waren vanaf dat moment niet meer geldig. Paren die wilden trouwen waren verplicht om het huwelijk burgerlijk te laten voltrekken. Hierdoor werd het normaal in Frankrijk dat religieuze families twee huwelijksvoltrekkingen organiseerden — eerste de burgerlijke ceremonie en later een religieuze. In 1789 werd een wet aangenomen waardoor burgers alleen nog in de hoofdstad van het departement konden trouwen in plaats van in hun lokale gemeenschap. In 1800 werd deze wet al weer afgeschaft, waardoor burgerlijke huwelijken weer in hun eigen omgeving werden voltrokken. Buiten deze korte periode (1789-1800) was het gebruikelijk dat bruid en/of bruidegom lid waren van de gemeenschap waar het huwelijk werd voltrokken.

      Ambtenaren noteerden de huwelijken die zij voltrokken, meestal in een voorgeschreven format, in een geboden boek dat bij het registerkantoor werd bewaard.
