Notes about Enno Ralph HAAN

Enno Ralph Haan, father of Eunice, Robert and Elaine married Elizabeth Ruiter in her family home at 636 Olympia St. SW. The couple were madly in love. They lived just opposite each other as Enno was living at the time at John and Cora Hekman's home on Grandville Ave. Aunt Cora was Enno's aunt and he was attending high school at the time. Enno was born on Grandville Ave. above his parents grocery store. As his family grew larger, he spent much of his very early years at his grandmother Haans' home living with his two unmarried aunts, Minnie and Cora. Cora's sister Ricky was John Hekmans first wife who died in child birth for her daughter Freda. John married Cora who helped raise her nephew Edward and neice Freda. Enno's father Chris decided to move his family to Sully,Iowa where he set up another grocery-meat market. Enno hated Iowa and his mother encouraged him to return to Gr, get his high schooling and College degrees which he very much wanted to do. He met Liz, fell in love and they decided to marry because Liz was 3 months pregnant. Liz felt so terrible she wanted to die and was found on the banks of Grand River by her father before she went into the water. Her father reassured her of their love and understanding and the wedding was arranged. Enno went to Calvin College, Eunice was born, they first lived on Sheridan Ave. just off from Hall St. Enno was an all A student in high school and college. He taught at Calvin for a year in the History Dept. which was his major. He then accepted a position at the Pine Christian school on the West side of GR. He had to give up teaching during the Depression years as the pay was only $6 a week and he had 3 children at that time to provide for. Enno went into the Insurance business which he did well but never liked. He then was offered a position with Curtiss 1000 Envelope Co. as the main sales Rep. in the State of Michigan. He enjoyed this work immensely and financially very well. He held this position until his untimely death at age 59. Enno loved to read and was a history scholar. He enjoyed going to Florida every winter with his best friend since boyhood, Arie De Borst. He was a gentle man, a strong leader in the church having served as the clerk/sec'y on several occasions. He was very fond of his grandchildren and proud of his son Bob who obtained a Mater's Degree in Social Work from the U of Mich. Enno died suddenly on the sidewalk in front of St. Mary's hospital in Gr. around 2:30 pm. He is buried at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with his wife Liz. who died at age 90, in 1993.
