Notes about Wilem Matthijsz. de Roo

Willem Matthijsz. 23-jaar oud vertrok in 1685 naar Indië als Assistent. De scheepssoldijboeken
(SS) uit de 17de eeuw hebben het niet overleefd, maar uit de rollen van gekwalificeerden (KW)
kunnen we zijn carrière volgen. Hij klom gestadig door de rangen van de V.O.C., 8 jaar Assistent,
3 jaar Onderkoopman, 4 jaar Koopman, waarna hij in de hogere posten terechtkwam als
Visitateur-Generaal, Secretaris van de Hoge Regering en Gouverneur van Makassar. Nu begint zijn
carrière een enigszins vreemde loop te nemen, in de generale missiven (GM) van 25 febr. en 4
sept. 1703 lezen we dat Willem tot Gouverneur van Makassar is benoemd en daar 10 mei arriveerde.
De GM van 29 aug. 1704 vermeld dat hij naar Batavia opgeroepen (ontboden) is, maar in de GM van
30 nov. dat hij op 23 aug. plechtig als Gouverneur werd voorgesteld en in dezelfde GM dat hij in
de Raad van Indië geassumeerd werd. (hoogstwaarschijnlijk als Raad-extraordinair). In de GM van
24 aug. 1705 lezen we niet alleen dat hij 13 juni uit Makassar in Batavia aankwam en zijn plaats
in de Raad innam maar in dezelfde adem wordt vermeld dat hij Directeur van Bengalen wordt, en dat
is vreemd want het is duidelijk een stap terug hoewel uit de KW blijkt dat hij zijn plaats als
Raad behoudt.
