    Denis had al een bewogen geschiedenis achter de rug, voordat hij op de tweede kerstdag 1944 in Roermond door een Standgericht onder leiding van majoor Ulrich Matthaeas een doodvonnis kreeg opgelegd, dat nog diezelfde dag vlak over de Duitse grens in een bosgebied bij het plaatsje Elmpt ten uitvoer werd gelegd. Denis had in een Duits kamp gezeten, maar was gevlucht. Na zijn arrestatie werd hij gedwongen aan het werk gezet op het vliegveld in Venlo. Ook daar nam hij de benen. Uit angst voor een nieuwe arrestatie hield hij zich schuil in een zelfgemaakt hutje in een bosje bij een hoeve. Op 23 augustus 1944 vroeg hij de passerende Russische Maria Kotenko, of zij een boterham of een sigaret voor hem had. Uit medelijden haalde zij voedsel en rokerij van huis. Nadat Denis haar had gevraagd, of zij ook ondergoed voor hem had, nam zij hem mee naar huis en verzorgde zij hem. Hij knapte op en bleef als onderduiker. Begin oktober 1944 werd hij met zestien andere mannen bij een grote razzia in de Luikerstraat opgepakt. Denis wist te voorkomen dat hij opnieuw naar Duitsland werd weggevoerd door zich met enkele andere gearresteerden onder de vloer van de goederenloods van de NS in Roermond te verstoppen. Hij keerde naar zijn onderduikplek terug. In de kerstnacht 1944 verschenen parachutisten aan de deur. Zij wisten, blijkbaar door verraad, dat Denis in de woning verbleef. Toen de Duitsers op de vloer schoten en aanstalten maakten een handgranaat in het gat van de schuilplek te gooien, kwam hij tevoorschijn.
