    Hij werd lid van de NSB en van de Germaanse SS. In september 1941 werd Van Dijk benoemd tot commandant van het politiekorps te Nijmegen als opvolger van politiecommissaris Veltman. In de loop van 1942 vormde hij binnen het politieapparaat de zogeheten "Politieke Dienst", bestaande uit fanatieke jodenjagers o.l.v. de NSB-er Marinus Verstappen. Van Dijk werd op 8 juli 1943 in de Hertogstraat door Henk Romeijn, een verzetsman uit Waalwijk, neergeschoten. Van Dijk raakte daarbij zwaar gewond en overleed op 31 augustus 1943 aan zijn verwondingen in Arnhem. Hij werd opgebaard in de nieuwe raadszaal van het stadhuis in Nijmegen, met militaire eer begraven op het "Heldenfriedhof" van Rustoord. Na de oorlog werd het graf geruimd en is zijn stoffelijk overschot overgebracht naar de Duitse militaire begraafplaats in het Limburgse Ysselsteyn.
