En dan overlijdt zijn vrouw Elisabeth Dam op 03.04.1892 terwijl haar man in Amerika is, de kinderen blijven achter bij hun grootmoeder. Vervolgens worden de 4 kinderen (de oudste is slechts 14) met de S.S. Veendam ingescheept, aankomst 08.06.1892 te New York, bestemming Wisconsin [hier]: Wietze, Atje, Anne en Jelle Sjoerdinga.

Atje wordt in de US "Ida" en trouwt 19.05.1901 met Louis Derk Hoekstra; zij overlijdt 22.03.1927 in Chicago [haar graf hier; zijn graf hier - geboren te Aalsum als 20.11.1878 Lolle Dirks Hoekstra]
