Hessel Meckema van Aylva is in 1608 geboren op Haniastate te Holwerd als zoon van Douwe Ernst van Aylva en Luts Hesselsdr. Meckema. Als kapitein maakte hij een buitenlandse (studie)reis, waarvan zijn album amicorum getuigt; op 14 november 1634 trouwde hij met de Oostenrijkse gravin Elisabeth von Althahn (1597-1663). Hij werd op 5 december 1637 kolonel. Hij was kommandant van de Staatse troepen in Oost-Friesland. Na 1650 was hij drost van Leer. Op 11 april 1652 is hij tot baron van het HeiligeRoomse Rijk verheven. Bij een executie te Lich in Hessen werd hij op 21 april 1660 door boeren doodgeslagen. Hij en zijn vrouw waren sedert 1640 eigenaar van Brandstede te Holwerd; beiden zijn in de dorpskerk begraven.
De bijdragen in het album amicorum zijn hier en daar besmuikt, geen wonder gezien het militaire milieu.
