Cees H. Thijssen was op 20 september 1928 te Nijmegen getrouwd met Gertruda Hendrina Antonia de Kluis, geboren te Kleef (Duitsland) op 8 maart 1906; het huwelijk eindigde door de dood van Gertruda op 5 maart 1930. Op 5 februari 1937 hertrouwde Cees Thijssen te Nijmegen met Gerarda Janssen, geboren op 29 juli 1907 te Duisburg (Duitsland). Samen kregen zij drie kinderen.

Eind september 1944 ontplofte tijdens grondwerkzaamheden van Cees Thijssen en zijn collega Gradus een granaat in hun nabijheid. Cees raakte ernstig gewond door granaatsplinters in zijn rug. In het noodhospitaal van het Canisius-Ziekenhuis aan de Tweede Walstraat werd hij opgenomen en langdurig verpleegd. Hij leek op te knappen, maar kort voor hij naar huis zou mogen gaan kreeg hij op 9 maart 1945 een ernstige terugslag door bloedvergiftiging, waarschijnlijk samenhangend met de vele niet te verwijderen granaatsplinters in zijn rug. De volgende dag overleed hij. Zijn jongste broer Jo was op 2 november 1944, toen hij in het kader van de Arbeitseinsatz te werk was gesteld in Euskirchen bij Keulen, bij een geallieerd bombardement om het leven gekomen. De familie Thijssen vernam dat enkele dagen na het overlijden van Cees. De ouders Thijssen hadden daarmee hun beide zonen verloren. Vijf dochters overleefden de oorlog.

In het dagblad De Gelderlander van 4 mei 1945 is een dankbetuiging opgenomen voor het medeleven bij het overlijden van Cornelis H. Thijssen. Er is o.a. dank voor het personeel en artsen van het Sint- Canisius-Ziekenhuis, en voor de directeur en het personeel van de Gasfabriek. Hij liet een weduwe, Grada Thijssen-Janssen, en drie kinderen achter. Zijn naam staat vermeld op de gedenksteen in het Nuon-gebouw, en in de Gedachteniskapel op het kerkhof in Brakkenstein.
