Ten tijde van de bezettingsjaren is Johann actief in het verzet. Op 7 juli 1941 wordt hij gearresteerd wegens spionage en voor twee tot drie maanden vastgezet in de gevangenis van Scheveningen, het ‘Oranjehotel’. Johann wordt veroordeeld tot de kampen en komt aanvankelijk terecht in kamp Vught. Op een onbekend moment wordt hij gedeporteerd naar concentratiekamp Mauthausen in Oostenrijk.


Al tijdens de oorlogsjaren is Mauthausen berucht als een van de concentratiekampen waar het zwaarste regime heerst; de Duitsers zelf spreken van de Knochenmühle, de ‘bottenbreker’. Gevangenen worden er in het kader van Vernichtung durch Arbeit aan het werk gezet in de nabijgelegen steengroeve, met het doel hen lichamelijk en geestelijk af te breken. Ze krijgen nauwelijks afdoende te eten, ontvangen geen medicijnen en staan bloot aan extreme, sadistische mishandelingen. Met rotsblokken tot 50 kilo moeten de gevangenen vanuit de groeve de 186 traptreden van de ‘Dodentrap’ naar het kamp zien te beklimmen. Degenen die tijdens de klim van uitputting in elkaar zakken, of door een bewaker zonder aanleiding zijn beschoten, nemen in hun val iedereen die achterop loopt mee, met vele doden en zwaargewonden tot gevolg. Ook worden gevangenen gedwongen elkaar van de hoge afgrond in de steengroeve te duwen.


Op enig moment wordt Johann doorgezonden naar het buitenkamp in het nabijgelegen Gusen, waar en al even gewelddadig regime heerst en de gevangenen opnieuw zware dwangarbeid moeten verrichten in de groeves.


Voor Johann worden de ontberingen uiteindelijk te veel. Hij bezwijkt aan uitputting, ondervoeding en zware mishandeling op 13 april 1945 in Gusen. Johann is 39 jaar geworden.
