    Lodewijk VI was mederegent vanaf eind 1098 en koning vanaf 3 augustus 1108. Hij was de eerste grote Capetingse vorst die erin slaagde de vazallen in het kroondomein efficiënt te onderwerpen. Zijn pogingen om in te grijpen in de interne aangelegenheden van zijn grootste leengebieden, buiten het kroondomein, hadden echter weinig succes, bijv. de interventie om in Vlaanderen zijn kandidaat, Willem Clito, als graaf op te dringen (1127). Dank zij de feodale verplichtingen wist hij echter de territoriale vorsten in te schakelen in het verzet tegen de Duits-Engelse invasie van keizer Hendrik V (1124).
