    Guy van Avesnes was als broer van graaf Jan I van Henegouwen en (als Jan II) van Holland en Zeeland op diens verlangen verkozen tot bis-schop van Utrecht. Hij deelde diens nederlaag in 1304, toen het graafschap Holland en Het Sticht door Vlaamse troepen werden bezet. Tijdens zijn afwezigheid (1304–1305) vestigde zich een gilderegime in de stad Utrecht, dat het stadsbestuur vrijwel onafhankelijk van de bisschop-landsheer regelde. Op 14 september 1305 moest de stad capituleren voor de vrijgelaten bisschop Guy, maar zij behield de verkregen autono-mie. Guy wist het evenwicht tussen de partijen in Sticht en stad te bewaren. Hij beheerde persoonlijk de bezittingen van de heren Van Amstel van Van Woerden, m.n. Amstelland en de stad Woerden. Na zijn dood vervielen deze lenen aan de graaf van Holland. In zijn kerkelijk bestuur was hij een actief organisator, vnl. op juridisch gebied. De bouw van de dom te Utrecht is door hem sterk bevorderd. In deze kerk bevindt zich nog zijn graftombe met het enigszins geschonden grafbeeld.
