Notes about Luirt Luirts

Luirt Luirts was landbouwer op de Ikemaheerd te Niekerk, De Marne. Met Pasen 1729 speelde zich in de doopsgezinde gemeente te Rasquert een conflict af tussen de 22-jarige boerenzoon Luirt Luirts uit Saaksumhuizen en de doopsgezinde ouderlingen Jacob Lippes, Waelcke Eises en Tijaert Micheels. Luirts kleding werd toen te uitbundig bevonden, evenals zijn gedrag. Zijn hoed, een driekante steek in ruitjes geborsteld, beviel de ouderlingen niet, zijn haren waren te lang, zijn das te dik, zijn schoenen met staande kappen en lange riemen te fraai. Daarbij kwam nog, dat Luirt aan een harddraverij had meegedaan en drie keer naar de kermis te Wehe was geweest. Zijn ouders steunden hem. De hoed had hij van zijn vader gekregen, de das van zijn moeder. De ouderlingen werd gevraagd met de Bijbel aan te tonen, wat er mis was. Luirt won de strijd, werd boer te Niekerk en zou in 1738 lekenpredikant in Houwerzijl worden, waar hij tot zijn dood in 1781 als vermaner werkzaam bleef.
